Life expectancy for hamsters is typically 2-3 years with proper care.
Habitat
Hamsters require a spacious enclosure with plenty of room to explore, burrow, and exercise. Minimum sizes vary depending on the species.
Minimum enclosure sizes:
- Syrian hamsters: at least 100cm x 50cm
- Dwarf hamsters: at least 80cm x 50cm
Hamsters are natural burrowers, so deep bedding (at least 15–20cm) is essential.
- Provide tunnels, hides, and enrichment
- Include a large exercise wheel (no wire wheels)
- Use safe bedding like paper-based substrate
A proper enclosure helps prevent stress, boredom, and unhealthy behaviours like bar chewing.
Diet
A balanced diet is key to keeping your hamster healthy and active.
Main diet:
- High-quality hamster mix or pellets
- Should make up most of their diet
Fresh foods:
- Vegetables: broccoli, cucumber, carrot
- Fruits (small amounts): apple (no seeds), berries
Protein (occasionally):
- Mealworms or insects
- Boiled egg (small amounts)
Fresh water should always be available. Avoid sugary, salty, or processed foods.
Temperature & Hibernation
Hamsters are sensitive to temperature and should be kept in a stable environment.
- Ideal temperature: 18–24°C
- Avoid drafts and direct sunlight
Hibernation risk:
If temperatures drop below 15°C, hamsters may enter a state similar to hibernation called torpor. This can be dangerous and is often mistaken for death.
- Body becomes cold and stiff
- Breathing slows dramatically
If this happens, gently warm the hamster and seek veterinary advice. Prevent this by keeping their environment warm and stable.
Hydration & General Care
- Provide fresh water daily (bottle or bowl)
- Spot clean enclosure regularly
- Full clean every 1–2 weeks
Hamsters are very clean animals and groom themselves, so they do not need bathing. Instead, provide a sand bath for natural cleaning.

- Helps remove oils and keeps fur healthy
