Habitat
Guinea pigs need a large enclosure with space to move, hide, and explore.
Minimum size:
- At least 120cm x 60cm for two guinea pigs
Guinea pigs should not live alone—they are social animals and need companionship.
Loneliness can lead to stress and poor health.
- Provide soft bedding (paper-based recommended)
- Add hiding spots and tunnels
- Include a hay rack and feeding area
Diet
Guinea pigs require a high-fibre diet and cannot produce their own vitamin C.
Main diet:
- Unlimited hay (essential for digestion and teeth)
Fresh vegetables (daily):
- Bell peppers (high in vitamin C)
- Leafy greens like romaine lettuce and kale
Pellets:
- Vitamin C-fortified guinea pig pellets
Important:
- Vitamin C must be provided daily
- Lack of it can cause serious illness (scurvy)
Fresh water should always be available.
Temperature & Environment
- Ideal temperature: 18–24°C
- Avoid high heat and humidity
Guinea pigs are sensitive to heat and can suffer from heatstroke.

- Clean enclosure regularly
- Spot clean daily
- Full clean weekly
Guinea pigs groom themselves but may need occasional brushing.
- Trim nails regularly
- Check for overgrown teeth
